One of my most challenging jobs as an artist can be to create the likeness of the subject as seen through the eyes of the receiver of the artwork. Even when you meet the subject and take lots of photos it is not always enough as I can be requested to make alterations to make them look younger slimmer or alter parts of their appearance because that is how people like to see them. Taking other people’s photos and looking to regenerate the subject when they are partly hidden is quite a common request. Often, the subject in the artwork has died and photo material is limited. But I love the process of revealing the subject through a drawing or painting since it captures something different to what can be seen through a camera lens. The German Shepherd drawing and painting was done some years ago and often reminds me of this journey you go through to get what the owners want to see.
