Creating commissioned work is something I have done for people over many years and what they want varies considerably. The most important job is the first, where I gather all the information, meet the subjects of the work if they are still around and establish what the client wants. Most of the work is retrospective and with long distances between my studio and clients I have found emails and other means of posting images to me helpful in building design options for a painting or drawing. Quite often people only have a vague idea of what they want so the options help to clarify what is possible, how big and how much before committing to anything. Its exciting for me as it reveals many ways of showing how people and their animals can be portrayed with feeling and provide a narrative.
